Junior Vegetables & Fruit and Grain, Corn & Hay

How to prepare fruits and vegetables for exhibition: 

Choose medium carrots, potatoes, and beets. 

Choose regular-shaped specimens. 

Choose specimens as nearly the same shape and size as possible. 

Choose specimens that are free from blemishes of any kind. 

Polish with a dry cloth. 

Choose large onions. Bend the tops over some time before pulling so that the tops will stop growing after pulling, allow the onions to dry in the sun. DO NOT PULL. 

Potatoes must NOT be washed. 

Both green and red tomatoes must have calyx intact. 

Use sturdy plates to display. 

Put your age on the back of every tag as of June 1st. 

 

CLASS 500

VEGETABLES & FRUIT

(Homegrown in 2026)

1. Carrots, 3 roots, any variety (1" top left on). 

2. 3 red potatoes. 

3. 3 white potatoes. 

4. 3 onions, any variety. 

5. 3 heads of garlic. 

6. 3 red tomatoes, cherry (0-5 years of age, mark age). 

7. 3 red tomatoes, cherry (6-10 years of age, mark age). 

8. 3 red tomatoes, cherry (11-18 years of age, mark age). 

9. 3 red tomatoes, NOT cherry. 

10. 3 green tomatoes. 

11. 3 sweet peppers, any variety. 

12. 3 hot peppers, any variety, named. 

13. 3 jalapeno peppers. 

14. 3 ears of sweet corn. 

15. Butternut squash. 

16. Squash, any variety, named. 

17. Eggplant. 

18. Zucchini. 

19. 3 cucumbers. 

20. 3 beets (1" top left on). 

21. Pie pumpkin. 

22. 3 apples, named.

23. 3 pears, named. 

24. Mud Pie decorated to look like a map of Canada, using items from nature (10 & under, mark age). 

25. A collection of GREEN COLOURED vegetables and/or fruit in a suitable container, not to exceed 9"x9" or 9" in diameter.

26. A display from your vegetable garden, adding decorations to showcase your heritage, in a suitable container. 

27. SPECIAL: Homemade stuffed scarecrow, dressed to feature any country, entry NOT to exceed 1 meter on a firm base. Items may be purchased for this section. Prizes: 1st: $5.00, 2nd: $4.00, 3rd: $3.00, 4th: $2.50, 5th: $2.00 Donated by John & Kim Peirce.

28. SPECIAL: Display of fruit and/or vegetables (named) native to a specific country (named), using a suitable container. Items may be purchased for this section. Prizes: 1st: $5.00, 2nd: $4.00, 3rd: $3.00, 4th: $2.50, 5th: $2.00 Donated by John & Kim Peirce. 

29. SPECIAL: Decorate a fruit or vegetable to look like a NATIVE ANIMAL OF YOUR CHOICE COUNTRY. Toothpicks, skewers, buttons, etc may be used. Displayed on a firm base, to be judged on creative use of fruits & vegetables. Items may be purchased for this section (10 & under, mark age). Prizes: 1st: $5.00, 2nd: $4.00, 3rd: $3.00, 4th: $2.50, 5th: $2.00 Donated by Kelly Turnbull. 

30. SPECIAL: Decorate a fruit or vegetable to look like a WORLD GLOBE. Toothpicks, skewers, buttons, etc may be used. Displayed on a firm base, to be judged on creative use of fruits & vegetables. Items may be purchased for this section (11 & over, mark age) Prizes: 1st: $5.00, 2nd: $4.00, 3rd: $3.00, 4th: $2.50, 5th: $2.00 Donated by Darlene Ilett.

HIGHEST POINTS: $25 donated by the Paris Horticultural Society. 

 

JUNIOR GRAIN, CORN & HAY

CLASS 505

Prizes: 1st: $4.00, 2nd: $3.00, 3rd: $2.50, 4th: $2.00, 5th: $1.50 - Unless otherwise noted

1. Tallest stock of corn, CUT OFF AT ROOT TOP (10 & under, mark age).

2. Tallest stock of corn, CUT OFF AT ROOT TOP (11 & over, mark age). 

3. 3 ears of grain corn. 4. 

4 stalks of soybeans, CUT OFF AT ROOT. Displayed in a container supplied by PAS. 

5. SPECIAL: Display of grains/seeds to look like any country's flag, firmly mounted. Not to exceed 13"x18". Items may be purchased and will allow dye to be used for this section. Prizes: 1st: $15, 2nd: $10, 3rd: $5 donated by Darlene Ilett. 

Exhibits in sections 6-11 inclusive to consist of a sample grown in 2026. The quantity to be shown, 8" slice of a small bale or equivalent from a large square or round. Displayed in a container supplied by PAS. 

6. Hay, first cut legume. 

7. Hay, first cut grass. 

8. Hay, second cut legume. 

9. Hay, second cut grass. 

10. Hay, third cut legume. 

11. Haylage, 1/4 bushel, in a clear plastic bag
