Our History
It is no wonder that during the early 1800s, many settlers came to this beautiful and fertile land we call Paris, to grow their crops and raise their livestock. Agriculture has always been a crucial part of human life, and as new settlers of this great country, they looked to pioneers to raise the standards of farming, and life in general in these regions. The result was the creation of many Agricultural Societies in this area of Brant County; and on September 23rd 1858 these societies came together to hold the first annual Paris Fair.
Between the years of 1858 and 1908, there were livestock and produce contests annually, many different events that residents could participate in; and many new developments were added to the fair. Permanent multi-purpose buildings were erected, and attractions such as “Merry-go-rounds” were brought in to entertain the attending crowd. The Paris Agricultural Society was eventually created in 1907 to represent the region of Paris, and to serve as administration for the Fair.
Throughout the years the Paris Agricultural Society has withstood draughts and rain, economy ups and downs, and even building fires, to ensure that agriculture remains a foundation of life in our beautiful region.
